Belgorod events

Belgorod (Bilhorod in Ukrainian) is a city in the Russian Federation that lies very close to the border with Ukraine, a mere 80 kilometers from the city of Kharkiv. The city has been used as a staging ground for Russian troops in their invasion of Ukraine, and it has also faced attacks from Ukrainian forces, owing to its proximity to a major Ukrainian metropolitan center. Memes about Belgorod tend to imply either that Belgorod will be liberated from Russia (borrowing Russian rhetoric about the Donbas and Ukraine more broadly) or that residents of Belgorod have been made to experience what Ukrainian experience on a daily basis (bombings, evacuations, uncertainty, etc.)
