The Russian economy is heavily reliant upon the export of oil and gas to other countries. Since the start of the country's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, many countries have imposed sanctions related to this economic sector. Some countries, such as Hungary and Turkey, did not partake in these sanctions as fully as others. Russian media figures asserted that Europeans would experience adverse side effects of these sanctions, especially in the winter, as many countries relied upon Russian oil and gas for their heating needs. The first winter of the war was much milder than expected in central and western Europe.In March 2024 Ukrainian Armed Forces hit several oil refineries in Russia despite reportedly having been urged by the United States not to do that to avoid energy prices escalation.
