Memes about the Ukrainian language are often aimed at encouraging wider use of Ukrainian, instead of Russian, in personal and professional affairs. Some memes of this type also point out differences between Russian and Ukrainian, such as between the diminutives of the name Mariia, which would be Masha or Mashenka in Russian but Marichka in Ukrainian. The use of the Ukrainian language can be seen in many of these memes as a form of resistance against Russian imperialism, asserting the separation of Ukraine and Russia on both political and linguistic levels.
