Valerii Gerasimov is the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, and he oversees all Russian troops fighting in Ukraine (link to his Wikipedia page below). Memes about Gerasimov will often portray him delivering unwelcome news to Russian President Vladimir Putin about Russia’s war against Ukraine. Other memes will place him alongside fellow political allies of Putin. In the lead-up to the Wagner mutiny in June 2023, Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin accused Gerasimov of withholding supplies to the Wagner soldiers. Many memes will invoke Gerasimov in the context of Prigozhin’s accusation.
