Guterres (Antonio)

Antonio Guterres (born 1949) is a Portuguese politician and diplomat who has served as the Secretary-General of the United Nations since 2017. Prior to this role, he had a long career working as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015.As UN Secretary-General, Guterres has been outspoken in condemning Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022. In April 2022, Guterres visited Ukraine and was surprised to see that the Russian army shelled parts of Kyiv even when he was there. He has repeatedly called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and Russian withdrawal from Ukrainian territory in accordance with the UN Charter.
