Sergei Shoigu (sometimes written as Shoygu) served as the Russian Minister of Defence since 2012-2024. Memes about Shoigu most often comment on the military, the partial mobilization, Russian losses in the war and his personal friendship with Putin. Shoigu is also often evoked in connection with the other Russian political leaders, such as Sergei Lavrov and Dmitrii Medvedev. In June 2023, Wagner paramilitary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin led a mutiny and march on Moscow with the express aim of deposing Shoigu, and many memes arose in the aftermath of this short-lived event. On May 12 2024 Shoigu was replaced by Andrei Belousov as the Minister of Defence. Memes play up his falling out of favor with Putin and anticipate even worse scenarios for him to follow.
